Obituary

Arleen Friel (née Van Dyne), 96, passed away on January 29, 2021, as she wanted to, in her beloved home in River Edge, which she and her husband built in 1956.  She lived a full and active life, devoted to her family, friends and faith.

She was born June 1, 1924 in Secaucus, NJ to the late Ellsworth and Ella Van Dyne.  Cherished wife of the late Peter Friel (1996) who she was married to for 46 years.  Loving mother of Elizabeth Falker and her husband Steven of Rutherford.  Treasured and proud Nana to Brian Falker of Chicago.

A graduate of Jersey City State Teachers College, she taught in the Paramus and River Edge elementary schools.  Previous member of the former Cherry Hill Reformed Church, River Edge and current member of the Second Reformed Church of Hackensack.  Her faith strengthened her throughout her life, and she was devoted to her church as an active volunteer.

Arleen was well known for her talents with crafting, sewing (she made her own wedding gown), knitting and baking, and she also enjoyed reading, gardening and trips to Maine.
