Miriam Vitolo (née Maher), 83, beloved wife, mother, sister, aunt, teacher, and friend, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family and friends.
Born an identical twin on February 23, 1943, in New York City to William Maher and Grace England Maher, she was one of four siblings. Raised in a close-knit household, Miriam was proud of being a Maher, her Catholic faith, her identity as a lifelong New Yorker, but most of all of being the identical twin sister of Muriel Maher. Miriam and Muriel moved through life side by side—through school, careers, and adulthood—never in competition, always in unwavering support of one another. Their bond defined her life—independent, but inseparable.
Miriam held her Catholic education close to her heart. She was a graduate of Cathedral High School, University of Mount St. Vincent’s, and earned her a master’s degree in teaching from Fordham University. Miriam is listed in Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges for excellence in academics, leadership, and service.
Her life was dedicated to education. As a special education teacher for over 32 years at St. Agatha Home for Children, Miriam made a lasting impact on her students and colleagues alike, and loved every minute of it. She connected, uplifted, and truly saw her students like only she could. Even after retiring, Miriam returned to teaching twice, working at P.S. 158 and most recently, as a substitute at Colonial Road School, unable to stay away from the work she loved so deeply.
Miriam met her beloved husband, Nunzio Vitolo, in college and married in 1968 at St. Patrick’s Cathedral. Their marriage was a true partnership—built on deep respect, joy, and unconditional love. They built a vibrant life in New York and lived in Bergen County, New Jersey. Together, while running “Nunzio’s” restaurants in Westchester, NY and “Villaggio’s” in Ridgefield Park, NJ, they raised their cherished only child, Vivien. They shared 39 beautiful years together until Nunzio’s passing in 2007.
As a devoted mother, Miriam passed down her unique humor, sense of loyalty, and family values to Vivien, which created a special kind of closeness that was both effortless and enduring. Miriam, Nunzio, and Vivien, alongside Muriel and her son John, formed a family of five, often seen at the River Edge diner.
Brilliant, resilient, and deeply kind, Miriam had a rare ability to make people feel seen, valued, and welcomed. Her warmth, integrity, and generosity touched everyone she met. She genuinely loved people and had a wide circle of friends. Whether at a pool party, a card table, or a lively restaurant celebration, she brought energy, humor, and connection. Time spent with her was time well spent.
Miriam faced every challenge with extraordinary strength, grace, and fight. As a parishioner of St. Peter the Apostle Church in River Edge, NJ, her faith in God sustained her positivity and guided her outlook. She chose the bright side of life, was a source of comfort, and when asked how she was, always answered, “Wonderful.”
Miriam is survived by her daughter, Vivien Vitolo; her sister, Grace (Maher) Reynolds; her sister-in-law, Rose Vitolo; her nieces, Camille Vitolo, Nancy (Vitolo) Kaiser, Grace Reynolds Tokarz, Holly Reynolds, Rachel Reynolds-Evans, Meredith Maher, and Megan Maher; her nephews, Michael Vitolo, Carmine Vitolo, Jared Reynolds, and William Maher Jr.; and her great-nieces and nephews, Angellee Patton, Ryan Lafferty, Jack Lafferty, and Kevin Kaiser.
She was predeceased by her identical twin, Muriel Maher; her beloved husband, Nunzio Vitolo; her brother, William Maher Sr.; her brothers-in-law, Michael Vitolo, Anthony Vitolo, and Carmine Vitolo; and her nephews, Dominic Vitolo and John Lafferty.
Miriam was more than a wife, mother, sister, aunt, and friend—she was someone you felt lucky to know and even luckier to love.
