Joseph Maugeri, 97 of River Edge began his journey to heaven on January 1, 2021. Devoted husband of 68 years to the late Ann Maugeri. Joseph was predeceased by his cherished daughter Ann Marie and is survived by his loving son Vincent and his wife Marion. He will be sadly missed by his grandchildren Lori (Jim), Lynn, Tina, Vincent (Nicole) and Larissa (Eric) and 9 great grandchildren, his son-in-law Eugene and many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his brothers, Nat and Vincent, and his sister, Frances. Joseph was born in Italy in 1923 and then grew up in the Bronx where he met his wife. After moving to Alpine where he was a member of the Alpine Fire Department, they finally settled in River Edge.
Joseph was a kind, generous and loving family man. He was loved by all who knew him. He was a WWII veteran and was one of the first ashore at Omaha Beach on D-Day. He was a lifelong member of River Edge VFW Post 876 and Commander for over 40 years. A devout Catholic, he read the Bible everyday, was a parishioner of St. Peter the Apostle Church and served as an usher for over 55 years.
After retiring at the age of 72 from his lifelong job, he continued to work as a crossing guard at Cherry Hill School for 23 years until he retired at the age of 95. He was loved dearly by all the children he crossed.
Funeral Mass Friday, January 8th, 10AM, St. Peter’s Church, 445 Fifth Avenue, River Edge. Visitation Thursday, January 7th, 4-8 PM, at St. Peter’s Church. Interment at St Joseph’s Cemetery, Hackensack. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in his name to the RE Police, Fire or Ambulance Dept. or Cherry Hill PTO or St. Peter the Apostle R.C.
