Theresa A. Hughes (née Mattiace), 81, of Township of Washington, entered into eternal rest June 22, 2022. She passed peacefully surrounded by love and family. She was a much beloved wife to Samuel (Sammy) Hughes for almost 60 years. Loving and compassionate mother to Christopher Hughes, John Hughes (Marcia Lopes), Annmarie D’Agati and husband John. Cherished grandmother to Brendan, his wife Stephanie and granddaughter Julia. Devoted aunt to Lauren Finnerty and her husband Brian and great aunt to Isabella (Bella), Brian (Bubba) and Emily. Predeceased by her larger-than-life brother, John Mattiace and much loved Mom and Dad.
Theresa was born in New York City (Hells Kitchen) to Anna (née Nolan) and Otto Mattiace. They moved to New Jersey, where she met Sammy and created a home and family. Her family was the most important thing in her life – she loved them all unconditionally and was always there to help in any way that she could. She was ever present at all sporting events, dance recitals, school plays and whatever else any of the kids were involved in – some of her best times were clapping in the stands or the audience with a proud smile on her face.
Her next love in life was feeding everyone – she was a great cook and enjoyed nothing more than watching her family feast on any meal she cooked. Always willing to go anywhere at any time, some of her fondest memories and most cherished places to visit were Ocean City, MD, Cape May, NJ and Hilton Head, SC. She was fortunate enough to enjoy time in Cape May and Hilton Heard this year with her family.
To honor her life and memory, visiting will be on Tuesday, June 28th, 4-8 PM at the Beaugard-McKnight Funeral Home, 869 Kinderkamack Road, River Edge. Funeral Mass will be held Wednesday, June 29th, 10 AM at St. Peter the Apostle R.C. Church, River Edge. Interment Rockland Cemetery, Sparkill, NY.
