Mary Rose Rice was born in Hawley, PA to the late Michael and Mary Monaghan. Beloved mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, she passed peacefully Thursday at 97, surrounded by her children in her home in River Edge, NJ. A woman of incredible faith, daily Mass and family were the center of her life. She was predeceased 30 years ago by her beloved husband, Greg Rice, one of the finest distance runners in history and recipient of the 1940 Sullivan Award. She grew up in Hawley, PA, and graduated from Mount St. Vincent College with a BA in Mathematics.
She is survived by her 8 children, 18 grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren: Gregory (Carol) of Drexel Hill and their 6 children and 18 grandchildren, Mary Jane Rice of Boston, Michael (Kim) of River Edge and their 3 children, Kam Walenza of New Milford and her 3 children, Father Patrick Rice of the Diocese of Albany, John (LaQucia) of San Diego and their 2 children, Kathryn Rice of Santa Fe and her 2 children, and Maureen (Greg) Zampino of River Edge and their 2 children.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, September 4th, at 10 am at St. Peter the Apostle Church, 445 5th Ave, River Edge, NJ. The mass will be live streamed. The link is as follows: https://saint-peter.org/livestream/. She will be laid to rest at Blessed Virgin Mary Queen of Peace Cemetery in Hawley, PA.
